Steven Christopher McGinnis, 65, of Portsmouth, passed away Friday, November 29, 2019 at SOMC.
He was born August 14, 1954 at Ft. George Meade, MD, a son of Norman Edward McGinnis of Minford and the late Etta Louise Rayburn McGinnis.
Steve was a 1972 graduate of Portsmouth West High School and he received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Higher Education degrees from Ohio University.
Retired from the Portsmouth City Schools, he also taught at Eastern Local High School in Pike County for more than 25 years, and was an adjunct professor of English at Shawnee State University. Steve also served as a Scioto County Sheriff’s Office Special Deputy and as a Shawnee State Park employee and ranger for 27 years. Steve was currently working at The Gun Barn.
Steve was an integral part of the SSU Native American Artifact Show for many years, and was the founder of the former Ohio Valley Miata Club. He was an active member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church and a leader in the Rejoice & Recovery program there.
Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Debra Irene Veazey McGinnis, whom he married August 28, 1975 in Portsmouth; his father and stepmother Norman and Faye McGinnis of Minford; two children, Christopher Orin (Jamie) McGinnis of Milford Center and Rebecca Renee (Bruce) Kalb of Portsmouth; a brother, Randall Edward (Patty) McGinnis of Redding, CA; eleven grandchildren, Trenity and Halle Andrus, Orin and Brycen McGinnis, Tyler McCoy, Christopher Duff, Serinity McCoy, Bruce Edward Kalb III, William and Benjamin Kalb and Cole Meihls; special family members, Melissa and Richard Jackson and their children, Nolan, Chase, Ryan and Abby, Barb and Monica Egermayer and Astrid Pettersson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Portsmouth with Rev. Tom Charles officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home Sunday from 2 to 5 P.M. and one hour prior to services at the church Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Portsmouth High School Football Program, 1225 Gallia St., Portsmouth, OH 45662 and the Portsmouth Elementary School Music Program, 514 Union St., Portsmouth, OH 45662.
Dr. Randall Lebo Schlegel, 66, of Portsmouth, passed away Monday, November 25, 2019 at SOMC. He was born September 25, 1953 in Reading, PA, a son of the late Melvin William and Vera Lebo Schlegel.
Randy was of the Lutheran faith and he was a 1971 graduate of Governor Mifflin High School in Shillington, PA. He was quite the outdoorsman in his youth, even backpacking across the USA one summer with a friend. He also enjoyed rock climbing, white water rafting, SCUBA diving, canoeing and more. He was very proud of being a member and 32nd degree mason with the Aurora Masonic Lodge #48 F&AM. One of Randy's greatest pleasures was when he and Jeri would take long rides on his motorcycle.
Randy graduated cum laude from Mansfield (PA) State College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. He received an Associate of Science in Petroleum Technology from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and he received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University in Marietta, GA.
A man who loved knowledge and had varied interests, he held many positions over the years, including being an independent Chemical Dependency Counselor with a licensure of CCDC III-E in Ohio and a certification in Kentucky, Unit Supervisor at the Bradford Childrens’ Home in PA, Geo-Technician, Drilling and Completion Supervisor, Engineering Associate and Operations Manager in southern Ohio for Envirogas, Inc. of Mayville, NY, Chemical Dependency Counselor & Administrative Staff Trainer for Family Recovery Services in Hillsboro, OH, Intervention Training in the Hillsboro Schools, Drug & Alcohol Counselor at the Counseling Center, partnership with PMHA to administer a federal drug elimination grant, Drug & Alcohol Assessment private practice in Smyrna, GA, Driver Intervention and Drug & Alcohol counseling for a court diversion program in Athens, Minford Local School District Safe Drug-Free Schools coordinator, Researcher and Manager of Training at University of Cincinnati/The Ohio Resource Network, Injury Prevention, Public Health Educator and Emergency Planner for the Portsmouth City Health Department, Chemical Dependency counselor for Medication Assisted treatment of Opioid Dependency with Self-Refined, Inc.
Randy retired from Hand of Hope/Drug & Alcohol Treatment of Ashland, KY doing individual and group counseling for repeat offenders and he worked as a Chiropractic Physician from 1998 to the present.
Surviving is his best friend and companion, Jeri Lou Weaver Hughes, of Portsmouth; two sons, Randall L. Schlegel II of Erie, PA and Daniel Byers of Lebanon, OH; a brother, Todd Schlegel of Reading, PA; and his special dog, Buckshot.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4:30 P.M. Sunday, December 8 at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth. A Masonic Service will be conducted by the Aurora Masonic Lodge at 4 P.M., followed immediately by the Memorial Service with Pastor Robert Coffey officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 P.M. the day of the service.
Carol A. Jackson, 81 of Friendship died Monday, November 25, 2019 at SOMC Hospice. She was born November 22, 1938 in Pike County to the late Dean and Ethel Beoddy Jackson. In addition to her parents, Carol also suffered the loss of her younger sister, Susan Grace.
Carol lived all her life in Scioto County near Friendship, Ohio. She went to school at Portsmouth West and at Ohio University in Athens. She taught school for thirty-five years in the Washington Nile District. She was an active member of Faith Tabernacle in Friendship from the time of its establishment until it closed.
She then became a member of Bethel United Methodist Church on Route 52 West, where she taught and sang. She was active as a teacher and volunteer missionary at Mount Hope Bible Camp in Adams County, and helped in numerous Bible Schools with Dale and Belva Beery. She also visited local churches as a “Circuit Rider” with the Bluebird Perish established by the late Rev. Sam Fillmore. She was a twenty-year volunteer for Hospice of Southern Ohio.
Carol is survived by 2 brothers; Edwin (Sandy) Jackson of Central, Ohio and Tim (Lynn) Jackson of Florida, also surviving is long-time friend, Herman Hobbs who has cared for her in her illness, and many loving members of her church family.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Bethel United Methodist Church in West Portsmouth with Rev. Rick Phillips officiating and interment in Worley’s Run Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Sunday starting at 1:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth.
Raymond Carl Holder SR, 78 of South Shore, KY passed away Thursday, November 28, 2019 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, OH. He was born in Clark County, KY June 26, 1941 a son of the late Marion Holder and Lucille Blackwell Heaton.
He served our country in the United States Air Force and retired from CSX Railroad. Raymond enjoyed Fishing, Hunting and Gardening he was an avid outdoorsman.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers Russell Holder and Bob Shipp.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years Anna Meadows Holder, three sons; Raymond Holder JR, Randall Holder both of South Shore, KY and Ronnie (Sandra) Holder of Purcellville, VA; three daughters, Mona (Jim) Hockaday of Louisa, VA, Emma (Tim) Vansickle of South Shore, KY and Heather (Tracy) Nichols of Kingsport, TN; one brother, William (Barbara) Holder of Lexington, KY; one sister Shirley Rankin of Lexington, KY; nineteen grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren and many other family and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Morton-Hunt Family Funeral Home in South Shore, KY with Pastor Gary Arthurs officiating. Burial will follow at Siloam Cemetery in South Shore, KY. Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, December 1, 2019 from 12 P.M. until the funeral hour at 2 P.M.
Reva Darlene Felts, 88 of Delaware, Ohio, passed away Nov. 28, 2019 in Arbors of Delaware Nursing and Rehab. She was born in Greenup County, Kentucky, July 29, 1931, a daughter of the late Everett Griffith and Virgie Clay.
Preceded in death besides her parents are her husband, Benjamin Felts, 2016.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet Matthews of Richwood, Ohio and Deborah Kennedy of North Lewisburg, Ohio, two brothers, Bradley Ray Griffith of Cold Springs, Kentucky and Holbart Griffith of Wheelersburg, Ohio, one sister, Valarie Shrewsberry of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, three grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held 12 noon Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019 at the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore, Kentucky with rev. Kenny Fox and Rev. Charles Mallory, officiating. Rosie Cordle, 92, of Minford, passed away peacefully and went home to be with the Lord, Friday, November 29, 2019 at Minford Retirement Center.
She was born May 11, 1927 in Morgan County, Kentucky, daughter of the late Johnnie and Millie Gambill Wright. Rosie served the Lord for over 80 years and has earned her reward in heaven.
She was a personal care assistant for more than 25 years, and attended Rubyville Community Church. She is survived by her seven children, Darrell (Anna) Cantrell of Beaver, Jeanetta (Henry) Collins of Minford, Larry Cantrell of Minford, Sue (David) Collins of Pataskala, Vess (Penny) Jordan of Beaver, Herb (Rosie) Jordan of Beaver, Mike (Jill) Jordan of Beaver; 17 grandchildren; many great and great great grandchildren, and two step children. She was a loving mother and mamaw who left to them her legacy of serving the Lord and being ready for heaven. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Lonnie Cantrell, Vess Jordan, and Burns “Bob” Cordle. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Minford Retirement Center for their years of loving care of Rosie and a special thanks to SOMC Hospice.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Rubyville Community Church with Pastors Calvin Ray Evans and Brian Baer officiating. Alma Louise Euton Hoffer, age 89 of Otway, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at her home.
She was born on January 11, 1930 in Henley, Ohio to the late Albert Euton and Hazel Emma Thompson Euton. On October 7, 1948 she was united in marriage to Russell Glenn Hoffer who preceded her in passing on December 11, 2014. Surviving are one son, Marc Edward Hoffer and wife Tracey of McDermott; daughter, Barbara Jo Hansen of McDermott; sister, Shirley Blanton of Lucasville; grandchildren, Will, Bekah, Ryan, Emily, Aaron and Kari; and 5 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her daughter Gwen Elaine Luther, three brothers and six sisters.
In Alma’s younger years she was actively involved in many civic organizations. She was a member of the Union Booster Club, Tops, the Scioto County Homemakers Association, Northwest Football Club and the Otway Historical Society.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the Botkin Hornback Funeral Home in Otway. Burial will follow in Euton Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. on Monday, December 2, 2019 and from 11:30 A.M. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home
Pickadell “Peggy” Williams, of Waverly, Ohio passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 30, 2019 in Waverly.
She’s the daughter of the late Albert and Anna Wooldridge. On November 2, 1949 she was united in marriage to Rev. James “Jimmie” Arthur Williams who preceded her in death on August 12, 2005. Surviving are three daughters, Kathy Brabson and husband Norman of Waverly, Nancy Ramsey of Waverly and Cindy Freeman and husband William of Chillicothe; two granddaughters, Danica Smith and Tiffany Pfeifer both of Waverly; four great grandchildren, Izabella, Sophi and Jett Smith and Harrison Henshaw and a sister-in-law, Helen Wooldridge. In addition to her parents and husband, Pickadell was preceded in death by a brother, Alva Lee Wooldridge.
Pickadell was a former manager of the Deli Department at Big Bear and most recently was employed by Walmart of Waverly.
Private services are being held at the discretion of the family.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to Hospice of Adena Health System, 111 W. Water Street, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601.
