The reward for information in the mass killing of free-roaming horses in Floyd County, Kentucky is up to $20,000 after six more horses were discovered yesterday by the Dumas Rescue organization. That bring the total number of horses and foals slaughtered to twenty.
The horses were grazing on reclaimed strip-mining land in Floyd County. With grazing land at a premium in the area, many people allow their horses to roam freely on the old strip-mining lands because they are relatively flat and have been replanted with native foliage. While the rescue group considers them abandoned, these are not wild horses.
Necropsies showed that the animals had been shot.
The area is remote but can be accessed via all-terrain vehicles. Workers from Dumas say they found six more horses over the weekend, including a yearling and a pregnant mare. The case made headlines all over the country and donations began to pour in for reward money to find the person or persons responsible.
Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt said the investigation was made more difficult by the fact that his department could only access the area via ATVs.
The reward fund now stands at $20,000. Anyone with information can call the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office at (606) 886-6171.
