With the Christmas shopping season ready to get into high gear Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless is offering safety tips for shoppers.

Criminals are on high alert for victims at this time of year, since they know many people will have money and merchandise on them and can be a little distracted by the bustle of holiday shopping.

Sheriff Lawless reminds shoppers to not forget about safety basics like parking in a lighted area if you head out for late-night or early-morning shopping.

And always keep your car locked and activate any anti-theft device. Those bargains you scored during Black Friday shopping are a tempting target for criminals. Try not to leave them in your car, but if you do – keep them out of sight. The trunk is a much better option than the back seat.

Your purse is a prime target for thieves. If possible, put your bank cards, checkbook, or cash in a front pocket and keep your eyes on it. You don’t want to be shuffling around in a purse searching for things. Don’t carry large amounts of cash. If a credit or debit card goes missing, make sure to report it to the bank immediately.

Don’t get so distracted or overloaded with packages that you forget to may attention to your surroundings. If possible, leave kids at home or with a babysitter. If you do take children into a crowded store, make sure to keep them close to you and in your sight at all times.

Keep an eye out for strangers approaching you to ask for anything. This is an especially busy time of the year for conning people.
