Several local townships and school districts have a lot more cash in their budgets thanks to money made from the sale of timber.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) presented Scioto County Commissioners with a check for $513, 568.21 for money made from the sale of timber. Some of the trees had to be taken down due to storm or other damage and others were cut down for forestry maintenance reasons.
The townships and school systems receiving the money are:
Scioto County - $128, 392.06
Brush Creek Twp- $6,444.74
Morgan Twp - $8,740.17
Nile Twp - $54,271.74
Rardon Twp - $20, 924.67
Union Twp - $10, 305.70
Washington Twp - $27,705.04
Northwest Local School District - $92,830 .54
Washington-Nile Local School District $163,953.55
The amount of money is based on the amount of timber harvested.
County Commissioner Bryan Davis admitted that timbering in Shawnee Forest can be a controversial subject. He said the County Commissioners have passed their concerns about limiting the practice on to the ODNR but added that the money is very important to schools. "Every little dime helps them balance their budgets"
Commissioner Cathy Coleman agreed. “It's something they can really put to good use.”
