ASHLAND – A man was arrested at a park on Monday after police reports indicate he solicited a person he believe to be a minor for a sex offense.

Authorities said the person solicited was actually a peace officer.

Police reports state Matthew Gilliam, 30, of Sandy Hook was arrested at a park location near the 1700 block of Chattin Drive by the Ashland Police Department, according to police reports, after attempting to procure a minor for a sex offense.

Police reports indicate that Gilliam’s arrest stems from an investigation involving communications with a peace officer that date back several months. Gilliam was charged with prohibited use of a electronic communication system to procure a minor (peace officer), a sex offense, according to police reports.

A handheld device was seized by police, according to police reports.

The offenses took place between May 21 and August 26, according to police reports.

Gilliam was lodged at the Boyd County Detention Center. Further details on the case were not immediately released.
